There is a common saying among the Yorubas “oruko rere san ju wura ati fadaka lo.” (Translated, a good name is better than silver and gold).
It is often said that your family name can open doors for you and this goes to say that a bad family name can equally shut doors against someone. To achieve a good name, there are diverse ways. It could be because you broke a new ground of invention, you have done well in business, literary arts, sports, entertainment or other areas. As much as you can make a good name so also, a bad name can be achieved particularly if someone engages in criminal activities.
In every family, we strive to put our name in the hall of fame so that it can open doors unto generations. The Wright brothers invented aeroplane and each time people fly the aircraft, they can’t but thank God for those who made travel an easy feat. I am sure it is not the same when the name Adolf Hitler is mentioned.
The rate at which people are spoiling their family names out of desperation to get rich quick is alarming. There is time for everything, says the Lord, the creator of the earth and the dwellers therein. It is unfortunate that men have turned it around to “No time to waste time.” Meaning they must move on the fast lane no matter the consequence.
Marvin Dickson was raised by a middle class parents who did everything within their means to train their children well. They showed them the way of the Lord and sent them to a relatively good private school. They lived within their means and were contented. Marvin got admission into the University through his brilliance and the goodwill of his dad (the Registrar assisted with his admission telling him how his dad was a good man). Things took a dramatic turn when Marvin got to campus and saw his friends driving exotic cars. “Guy, you are a big dude on this campus o.” He told Jeffrey, his friend. “Sebi you are Mr born again.” Jeffrey retorted. Since then Marvin began to look for ways of joining the big boys on campus.
One day, Marvin met Janet in the school fellowship. Janet was fair to look at and he approached her. “Hi, you seem new in this fellowship.” He said. “I have been looking for JCF (Joint Christian Fellowship), someone just directed me.” “You are welcome.” One thing led to the other, they became friends and were studying the Bible together. Shortly, Marvin started an uneasy feeling each time he was with Jane. All along, something kept reminding him about their devotional teaching on fornication and evil Association but he waved it off. He finally summoned courage to ask Janet out. Her answer shocked him; “I don’t do guys who have no car, My Jesus is rich.” It is time to know the way, he resolved. Two days later, he went to see Jeffrey. “Are you sure you are a man?” Jeffrey asked. Before nko, he answered. You sure say you get mind, he asked in pidgin. I dey. he answered again.
Jeffrey later introduced him to yahoo plus (diabolical nternet fraud). Within months Marvin bought first a Toyota Camry and then an Explorer jeep. At first he would keep the cars in his friends house when going home. Later, he stopped going home giving too much school work as excuse. He became famous on campus and Janet and him were one of the happening couples.
Trouble started when Marvin started having insomnia due to numerous nightmares. It grew worse and he became sick. When his friends could not handle it, they took him home. While taking him round the churches, his dad was asked to ask him what covenant he had with the devil. “God forbid.” His mum shouted. My son is a true Christian and a leader in campus fellowship. “I have something to say” Marvin groaned. “What?” Chorused his parents. I have been dining with the devil, he barely managed to say. He went on to confess how he joined the fraudsters, how they visited herbalists and engaged in rituals, how he has been seeing ghosts and having nightmares. His mum fainted and his dad was looking lifeless.
Marvin gave up the ghost after he managed to mumble some salvation prayers. None of his friends could visit his home and nobody knew what happened to his cars. The campus gossip papers were full of news of his demise. Marvin died the death of shame and his family name became popular (notorious) for the wrong reasons.
